As designers we aren’t content to simply make beautiful objects. There are so many other ways in which an object can be meaningful, apart from just being beautiful. Although we do find that beauty does help! Some of the things we consider when designing a new piece are:
The Story - Objects resonate with us more if there is a story attached to them. They can link us to a time, a place or a particular person. These links and memories are often what makes an object priceless.
The Materials - As design geeks we like to know exactly what our items are made from and where these materials come from. Where possible, we use ethically sourced 925 sterling silver and ensure that our packaging is made from recycled or recyclable materials which have as little impact on the environment as possible.
The Manufacture Method - How our items are made is super important to us. We have spent many hours carefully selecting the right artisan makers to create our pieces. All our pieces are made using traditional silversmithing techniques and are hand finished. It’s important to us that all our makers are paid a fair living wage and work in a clean, safe environment. We strive to make this happen.
We know that if an item we were considering purchasing had just one or two of these qualities then it would definitely motivate us towards making a purchase!
As designers we must also consider ALL of these things when we make a product! So, just a couple of things to think about! As designers our job becomes so much more challenging when we take all of these things into consideration. We love what we do though and that sense of satisfaction we get once we have completed a product makes it all worthwhile :)
We hope you love what we produce as much as we do and that this post gives you a little insight into how much careful consideration goes into each piece we create!
Till next time…
